Orianne is the younger sister of Carole Dembele, a generally cheerful and creative transplant from the Cote d'Ivoire.

Public Information

  • Parents and sister are known mutants. (Well, in dad's case, it's "complicated".)
  • Has posted some pretty impressive stop-motion animation shorts online.

  • Among the parkour community who know her, she's got a reputation for being a fast, agile traceur.
  • Makes no secret of being a mutant. In fact, her power is used almost reflexively for many tasks.

Mutation

Anne's power is a form of telepathy/telekinesis blended with mass conjuration and dispelling. However, as she uses this combination instinctively, she cannot make use of the psionic portion separately from puppeteering.

Puppets can be anything Anne visualizes; it doesn't have to be anything real, or even anything she's personally seen. However, the level of detail/accuracy will depend on how well she visualizes things. If she cannot visualize the detail—such as someone's retina or fingerprints—it won't be replicated.

Further, puppets do not have any unique abilities of what they mimic; visually duplicating another mutant does not grant the puppet their powers, for instance. However, many things can be mimicked by Anne's unconscious use of telekinesis (flight, sticking to walls) or mass replication (a spider spinning a web).

When Anne dispels a puppet deliberately, the mass vanishes entirely; no evidence remains behind. However, when a puppet is dispelled due to Anne losing control, it will instead dissolve into a sort of formless, inert goo. If Anne pushes herself past exhaustion, falls asleep, or loses consciousness, she loses control of all manifested puppets.

If a puppet is damaged, Anne takes a lesser form of the damage herself. This is because she views the puppets as extensions of herself and inflicts the injuries on herself telekinetically as an involuntary reflex. However, the more puppets she has out, the less 'her' any one puppet is, and so the less severe the inflicted damage will be. (As this is psychosomatic as much as anything, with five or more years of focused training in self-control, and a lot more self-awareness, she could theoretically rid herself of the habit.)

If Anne exhausts herself -- i.e., pushes her power to a limit where she can no longer keep puppets manifested -- she burns out her power for a period of time afterwards. How long this time is depends on how much she pushed herself; the harder she's pushed herself, the longer it lasts.

GM Notes

Anne's limits on manifesting puppets are:

  • 32 hours of sustained puppetry at most, less if she pushes herself in other areas.
  • Up to twice her own mass is not strenuous; more than that starts to become difficult to keep manifested, and twenty times her own mass is a hard limit she cannot pass. The mass can be split up into at most a hundred puppets at once, before Anne will exhaust herself keeping that many individual objects manifested. Inanimate objects separate from puppets count towards this total.
  • Controlling one body at a time is simple. Two leads to mild distraction. Trying to push past ten at once will cause a blinding migraine and rapid exhaustion. Anne can get around this by 'bouncing' her attention and control between puppets (and her own body), but her effectiveness is drastically reduced.
  • A five mile radius around Anne is easy for her to control within; if a puppet passes that range, it becomes increasingly difficult. This is a limitation of the psionic portion of her power; at her current age and experience she cannot pass fifty miles. With sufficient training and practice, she could theoretically push it to five hundred, but it would take concerted effort and more than a decade of practice to reach that full potential.
  • Anne prefers to manifest puppets within line-of-sight; while she /can/ manifest them behind a wall or a closed door—a useful trick—it requires considerably more concentration to precisely shape if she cannot see them; a mouse through a closed door is no problem, but duplicating a person would be much harder. Even with line-of-sight, she can't manifest something more than 500 feet from herself; manifesting something from an airplane far overhead a target, for instance, is not possible.

Skills

Aside from a number of artistic skills—unsurprising, given her mutation—Orianne is a skilled parkour traceur. Running parkour is something that helps settle her mind, work out restless energy, and overcome disappointments or upset. If she needs to sit and mull things over somewhere, it will almost always be somewhere high up or otherwise inaccessible, reachable generally just by parkour.

She has been known to 'cheat' a bit at her parkour when not in actual timed competition, however, creating inanimate things she needs—boxes, planks, etc.—through the mass conjuration portion of her puppeteering power, then dispelling them when she no longer needs them for a springing off point. It's good practice, after all, even if she'd never do it when being timed or racing someone else.

Anne is also trilingual, speaking English, French, and Akan. She has full fluency in all three, having been raised to speak them her whole life.

Personality

Anne is generally fairly cheerful and easygoing, if occasionally a bit naive. But she also has a need to /do/ something, to make a difference. Her parents used to, after all, and her sister was off training to save the world (at least, that's how Anne sees it), so... what good is Anne if she just sits around and makes art?

These activist tendencies have led her to the States, where she hopes to Make a Difference. Unfortunately, for all that she knows intellectually that the States are awful for mutants, it hasn't entirely sunk in yet on an unconscious level. Sometimes, she comes across as a little naive because of this, or gets caught by surprise by just how bad the anti-mutant sentiments can be.

Growing up in a country that had less anti-mutant feeling, and with two parents who weren't fazed in the least by powers. So despite her intellectual awareness of how negative people's view of mutants can be, she often uses her puppets almost reflexively, heedless of the risk. If she thinks she might run the risk of getting locked out of a building, she makes a puppet to leave inside before she steps out. If she needs an extra pair of hands, a puppet can lend them.

Then

Orianne Dembele had a relatively quiet childhood in Abidjan. The middle of three children born to Adwoa Dembele and Abel Albarino (one of Jamie Madrox's many clones), Anne was a creative soul from the very beginning. She grew up idolizing her older sister Carole in that way many younger siblings do.

That changed while she was away on a school trip when she was twelve. Her parents, sister, and brother went on a train ride to commemorate the closing of the final stretch of old track, and something went horribly wrong. Though Anne's family were unharmed, Carole was soon sent off to the States to be educated at Xavier's.

Suddenly bereft of her best friend and idol right as she was on the cusp of her teenage years, Anne didn't take this turn of events entirely well. When her own mutant powers came into full flower a year later, she hoped she would be sent to Xavier's to join Carole. Instead, to her chagrin, her puppeteering power was deemed 'harmless enough' not to require that sort of training—it posed no threat to those around her—and her parents kept her at home.

Though Anne was generally good-natured, this disappointment led to a phase wherein she acted out, as if she could somehow prove that her puppeteering power was worth training into better control. It didn't work as she had hoped; despite the undeniable advantages to being able to demonstrably be in two places at once, ensuring she had an alibi, neither parent ever seemed to fall for it. Her mother got very good at spotting puppets telepathically, and her father wasn't phased by the idea of someone being in more than one place at once.

Indeed, her acting out backfired when her little brother was able to successfully pin some of his own teenaged mischief on her.

And so she eventually settled down, resigned to life in Abidjan. Her restless energy was turned to other pursuits—in particular, parkour, which she found a very enjoyable pastime. She even took to doing stop-motion-esque animations using her puppets and posting them online; this gave her a solid grounding in a number of artistic disciplines.

Through it all, she continued to correspond with her sister. And for all that the adventures Carole was having sounded fascinating, she also began to see how bad things were for mutants in the States in comparison. Perhaps she wouldn't have cared so much if her sister hadn't been there herself, but as it was, she began to develop slightly activist tendencies.

This state of affairs lasted until she was old enough to seek higher education.

Perhaps, given everything, it wasn't too surprising that she chose to try to do so in the States once she was 18. Her father objected strenuously, pointing out that in the States attitudes towards mutants were not as favorable as in Africa. Anne knew this, and argued that if everyone took the easy path, nothing would ever get better. She'd heard the stories from her sister, after all. And she couldn't make a difference from so far away.

In the end, her father said simply he didn't want her to go because she might get hurt. She ignored this request, and went to seek her future—and her sister—in New York anyway. Perhaps there she could make a difference, prove herself.

Now

Arriving in New York in early September of 2045, Orianne started out by crashing in her sister's apartment. She promptly got mugged by three mutant teens, revealing her own powers in the process. Not an auspicious start.

Then she joined the newly-formed X-Factor Solutions. Hopefully that proves to be an improvement...
