Intro to MUSH

From X-Factor

Bboards

We use Myddin's BBoard system to post major announcements about the game. You can find all help files for the system on the game on +help bbs.

The important commands to keep in mind are:

  • +bbread
    • +bbread 1
    • This command will list all posts on the Announcement board for your review.
  • +bbread 1/#
    • Replace the # in the command with the number of the bbpost that you would like to read, for example: +bbread 1/1. You may also read a list of posts, such as +bbread 1/1-3. If you type +bbread 1/u, it will go through all unread messages on the board.
  • +bbnext
    • This command will allow you to read through bboard messages one at a time. That's all you have to type!
  • +bbpost <#>/<subject>=<body>
    • This is the easiest way to post an announcement in one line. Just post something like: +bbpost 1/Hello everyone!=I love you all. <3'" It will post on the game as:
+==========================~~~~~ Announcements ~~~~~=========================+
Message: 1/1 Posted Author
Hello everyone! Jun 29 2015 Roz

I love you all. <3

Channels

You can learn more about our comsys on game by typing help @channel. For more detailed info than this primer, check out our channel guide as well! Some important command examples are below:

  • @chan/on Public
    • Joins the channel Public, which can be spoken on with the alias +pub, as in +pub Hi!
  • @chan/gag Public
    • Temporarily gags the Public channel. A good tool for when you need to despam for a bit. Channels automatically ungag when you disconnect.
  • @chan/off Public
    • Turns off a channel entirely.
  • @chan/who Public
    • This command will show a list of all players who are listening to the channel.
  • +pub Hello world!
    • [Public] Example says, "Hello world!"
    • This is how you speak on channel. You can also pose on the channel:
  • +pub :waves!
    • [Public] Example waves!

Mail

The mail system is powerful, and you can learn a lot about it by typing +help +mail and reviewing the related topics on game. However, there are a few commands that you will find yourself using more than others. They are:

  • +mail
    • This command will show you a list of your mail. It may look something like this:
+============================================================================+
                                Mail Messages
                               (sorted by date)

  • +mail #
    • This command will allow you to read your mail one at a time. To read your first mail, you would type +mail 1. It will probably be slightly more informative than this:

From: Roz

  • +mail #-#
    • This command will allow you to read several mails in a row, for example:

  • +mail <player-list>=<subject>/<message>
    • This is the quickest, easiest way to send a mail. To produce the mails above, all I did was +mail Roz=Test/Test. If you want to include a longer mail with paragraph breaks, all you need to do is include a %r in the mail wherever you want a line break.

RP Commands

Okay, that's all great, but how do you actually RP, you may be asking. Well!

Once you've found an RP partner and decided what kind of scene you'd like to do, make sure you are in the same room, then:

  • Result
    • Command(s)
  • You say, “Hello!”
    • "Hello!
    • say Hello!
  • Player waves!
    • pose waves!
    • :waves!
  • Waving, Player says, "Hi!"
    • @emit Waving, Player says, "Hi!"'
  • <OOC> You say, “Hi!”
    • ooc Hi!
    • 'Hi!
  • <OOC> Player waves.
    • ooc :waves.
    • ':waves.

Getting Around

Exits

There are a few different ways to move around the game. The first is by using the room exits. These are visible at the bottom of the room descriptions you can see with the look (or l) command.

From this room, you could type tp to reach the TP Hub, or il to go into the Idle Lounge.

Quick Travel

A lot of the time, though, you want to get somewhere faster. We have a few different commands to help facilitate that. For all of these commands, you can view their on-game helpfile with +help <command>.

  • +ic - This will take you to the IC grid, specifically Midtown. Useful if you're in the OOC area and want to quickly hop back to the IC grid.
  • +hop <location name> - If you know the name of the room you want to hop over to, you can use this command, as in +hop Midtown to go straight to the Midtown room.
  • +go <player> - Go directly to a player's location.
  • +meetme <player> - Sends an invite for another player to either join your location or pull you over to their location. More commands available in the on-game helpfile.

Other Helpful Commands

All of these commands have helpfiles on-game that can be accessed with +help <command>.

  • +actor - Set your character's PB (played-by) in the on-game database.
  • +alts - Used to set your alts and view others' alts. (Alts on X-Factor are public.)
  • +graffiti - Set a temporary description addition on a room, such as indicating a new sign, damage from a fight, a note on the door, literal graffiti, etc.
  • +monitor - Keep track of connects and disconnects of other players, either a select group you set or everyone on the game. Useful for people who like to say hi!
  • +party - Used to open a public group scene to the game. Sends a message to all connected players about the group scene in progress and shows up in the connection screen while it's active.
  • +map - Shows a pretty map of NYC with what areas are on-grid and what areas can be RPed in using the TP Rooms.
  • places - A useful system for larger scenes which allows players to mark mini-areas of the scene to better keep track of who's near whom.
  • +sceneset - Set a temporary scene description for new players who come into the room to join.
